Bronze Fennel

Bronze Fennel

The Bronze Fennel is a dramatic landscape plant as well as a culinary herb. The brownish bronze color which deepens as the season wears on is truly unique in our experience. The flavor and use are similar to those of regular fennel. Mustard yellow umbel-shaped flowers appear late in the season, followed by flavorful seeds. Plant toward the edges or borders of vegetable gardens.  Bronze Fennel is said to not be a good companion when planted too closely with other vegetables, especially beans, tomatoes, dill, and carrots.   50 seeds PLANTING Foeniculum vulgare Tender Perennial, zones 6,7-10 Germination: 7-14 days Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 65-70ºF Seed Planting Depth:  Sow ¼” deep Starting Indoors: Start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost. Provide 65-70ºF soil temperatures.  Using peat, cow, or paper pots can help with the stress of transplanting, they grow delicate roots and successful transplanting may be challenging. Transplant after the last frost, 6-8” apart. Sowing Outdoors: Mid-spring when the soil temperature reaches 60-65ºF. Sow seeds close,  1-2" apart, thin to 6-8” apart. Growth Habit: Upright, branching Height and Width: 36-48” x 18-24” Spacing: 6-8” apart Light Needs: Full sun  Soil Needs: Bronze Fennel needs average to fertile, well-drained soil  Flowering: Mid to late summer, 65-70 days Harvest: Start when the plants are 8-12”, picking leaves as needed. Collect seeds when umbels turn from green to brown and before they shatter to the ground. Place in a paper bag until they are fully ripened and dry. Uses: Culinary, medicinal, flower gardens beds and borders, filler for flower arrangements, flowers attract butterflies, bees and beneficial insects Care: Water well during prolonged dry periods in summer. Removing flower stalks helps keep the plant producing leaves for a longer period. Bronze Fennel reseeds easily in mild climates,-removing flower heads helps decrease next season volunteers.  Providing support can help when the plants get tall. Can be grown in containers.

Sow 2-3 seeds per space/hill, 36-48” apart, in rows 48-60” apart.  Cucurbita Gourds: Harvest mature gourds before cold weather. Color deepens and skin is hard. Frost or freezing conditions causes injury to skins. Keep in a cool, dark, dry place for curing. Lagenaria Gourds: Harvest in the fall after a few frosts. Leaves and stems should be brown and dried and skin color faded. Require a long drying period; 3-6 months in a dry area with good ventilation. The gourds should not be touching each other. Check often for soft or rotten ones, discard them and if mold forms, wipe it off. When the seeds rattle inside and feel light they are dried. Tips: Heavy feeders, requiring high nitrogen. Plant the Snake Gourd into fertile soil or amend with compost or manure. Heavy water needs, mulch, and supply adequate water, at least 1” per week for optimum growth. Vines can grow 15 feet or more. Grow on a trellis for more uniform, straight gourds and for more garden space.

Cannellini Pole Dried Bean (Organic, 85 Days)

Cannellini Pole Dried Bean (Organic, 85 Days)

Originally cultivated in Argentina by Italian immigrants these creamy white beans are now favored in Italian cuisine. These climbing vines were vigorous and loaded with pods; we planted a four foot row and were impressed at the quantity and the flavor of the green pods before they fatten up on their way to the drying stage. 50 seeds PLANTING Phaseolus vulgaris Germination: 4-10 days Germination Temperature: Optimum soil temperatures 70-85ºF Seed Sowing Depth: 1” deep  Sowing Outdoors: After the last frost with soil temperatures above 60ºF. Sow 2-3” apart. Planting in soil under 60ºF results in poor germination.  How much does a packet plant: 12-15 foot single row  Harvest: Leave beans on the plant until most of the leaves have turn brown and pods are dried and withered. If fall weather is wet or frost threatens the harvest, pull up the plants and finish drying indoors.  Tips: Grow in light, well-drained soil, provide adequate, even moisture, especially at flowering time. Dry soil can result in low yields and fibrous pods. Do not over fertilize with nitrogen which results in a surplus of foliage and low, delayed pod growth. Adding inoculant at planting time aids in a larger harvest and more robust plants.

While committed to organic and non-GMO practices, the company lacks full transparency in their supply chain documentation. They demonstrate good environmental practices through minimal packaging and carbon-neutral shipping initiatives, but their social impact reporting needs improvement. Their seed-saving education programs and support for small farmers are commendable, though labor conditions at partner farms could be better monitored. Animal welfare policies are adequate but not comprehensive.
